This article outlines the requirements to have shipments cleared by NZ customs when parcels are declared as high value.
Orders that exceed the threshold in NZ of $1000NZD are declared as high value shipments. In order to have this cleared, duties, taxes and custom fees are required. Duty may be payable on items where the value of shipments going to one address has arrived in NZ on the same day and above the threshold. The amount of duty payable will depend on the item(s) shipped and their value.
For parcels with DDU shipping terms the receiver is liable for the custom fees. The requirements for clearance are below:
- Commerical invoice - SEKO can download this from our system if description of items is detailed upon sending manifest, if not our CS team will contact you accordingly for invoice.
- Client code - The receiver will need to supply a customs number (client code). Please see further information on client codes by clicking here: NZ customs website regarding Customs Number (individual/receiver)
Client codes
If the receiver has brought in items from overseas worth over NZ$1000 previously, there is no need to apply for a Customs Number - receiver would have received notification of this via email from Customs with their client code.
If receiver has never brought in items overseas worth over NZ$1000, you will need to apply for a Customs Number.
Applying for client code
1. Complete NZCS 224-A Customs Number Application for an individual person (PDF 818 KB).
2. Email the completed form and a copy of your photo ID to clientcodes@customs.govt.nz.
3. You will receive your Customs Number by email.
